The fine print

Terms of use

Using the site means you accept these. They're written to be read rather than to be impressive.

What this site is

Cane and Table publishes accessibility information about dining venues in Australia, written by members of the public who have visited them. It is a record of other people's experiences, not a certification scheme, an inspection service or professional advice.

We are not connected to, endorsed by or acting for any venue listed here unless a page says otherwise.

Accuracy, and its limits

Access details here are confirmed by visitors and dated. Venues change: furniture moves, staff turn over, a ramp gets built, a doorway gets a planter box put in front of it. Information that was right when it was recorded can be wrong today, which is why every answer on this site carries the date it was given and why we treat anything older than twelve months as stale.

If something matters to your visit, ring the venue and ask. We say that on every page and we mean it.

Your account

  • You need an account to write a review, confirm a detail or add a venue.
  • One account per person. Keep your sign-in details to yourself; what happens under your account is your responsibility.
  • You must be 16 or older.
  • You can delete your account at any time by asking us. We'll remove your profile. We may keep your reviews with your name removed, because deleting them would distort the record other people have relied on.

What you write

You keep ownership of your reviews, answers and photos. By posting them you give us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to publish, store and display them on this site and to quote them when promoting it. You can withdraw that by asking us to take the content down.

When you post, you confirm:

  • You actually went there, and you're describing your own visit.
  • What you've written is honest. Say what happened rather than what you assume it means, and don't state as fact something you haven't seen.
  • It's yours to post — your words, your photos, and you have permission from anyone identifiable in them.
  • You have no undisclosed interest in the venue. Don't review your own business, your employer's, or a competitor's.

Don't post:

  • Anything abusive, harassing, or aimed at a person rather than a venue. Naming an individual staff member is almost never necessary to make your point.
  • Anything untrue about a business or a person.
  • Anyone's personal information, including photographs of people who haven't agreed to be photographed.
  • Advertising, or anything you were paid to write.

Moderation

New venues and photos are checked before they appear. Reviews publish immediately and can be reported by anyone using the link on the review.

We can remove content or suspend an account that breaks these terms, and we'll generally tell you why. We don't remove a review because the venue disagrees with it. An honest account of a bad visit is exactly what this site is for.

If you run a listed venue

Venues are listed as a matter of public interest and we don't need your permission to list one. Email us to correct the factual details — address, phone, opening arrangements — and we will.

If you believe a review is false rather than merely unflattering, report it and tell us specifically what is untrue. We'll look at it properly.

Liability

The site is provided as it is. We don't guarantee it will be available, or that what's on it is accurate, current or complete.

To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for loss arising from using the site or relying on anything published here, including content written by other users.

Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies any guarantee, right or remedy you have under the Australian Consumer Law that cannot lawfully be excluded. Where our liability can be limited but not excluded, it is limited to supplying the service again.

Privacy and changes

What we collect and what we do with it is set out on the privacy page.

We may change these terms. The date at the top says when they last changed, and if a change materially affects you we'll say so on the site rather than quietly swapping the text.

Which law applies

These terms are governed by the law of New South Wales, Australia, and the courts of New South Wales have jurisdiction.
